Jersey Mike's Subs Tees Up with First Tee To Inspire 400+ Local Children
On Wednesday, July 23, Jersey Mike's Franchise Systems sponsored an inspiring and fun program at the Wayside Elementary School for more than 400 local children. Participants were from New Jersey recreation departments including the Ocean Township Recreation Department and The Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County. Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike's founder and CEO, shared his story with insights about mentoring and entrepreneurship.
Mr. Cancro founded Jersey Mike's at age 17, before he was even legally able to slice a sub. At the event, Mr. Cancro delighted the children by talking with them from atop a picnic table. He discussed how he started working at the original Mike's Subs in Point Pleasant, NJ, when he was 14. In sharing his story, he asked the teens their ages. Hearing "14 years old", he explained, "In just three years, you could have your own business like I did."
Mr. Cancro credits an important mentor - his football coach, who also happened to be a banker - for believing in him and backing his loan.
This summer, Jersey Mike's, in conjunction with The First Tee, will bring a message of hope - and lunch - to thousands of underprivileged children through its sponsorship of ten events like this throughout the country.
"We are proud to partner with The First Tee, an organization that shares our commitment to America's youth, in our own backyard where Jersey Mike's began", said Mr. Cancro.
Also teaming up with Mr. Cancro was trick shot golfer Dennis Walters. The program was not only about golf lessons but also life lessons as Mr. Walters told his life story and challenged his audience to reach for its dreams.
