Philanthropy: Sandwich shop provides food bank with bread, milk money

A sandwich franchise is making an impact for the Gig Harbor/Peninsula FISH Food Bank with its focus on charity.

Jersey Mike’s Subs at the Uptown Gig Harbor Shopping Center is collecting $1 donations from its customers with a sandwich purchase. The business has raised $1,675 during the past few weeks and handed over the check to FISH President Jan Coen. Jersey Mike’s Subs owner Jeff Gates bumped up the total to $2,000.

“Jersey Mike’s is excited to give back to the community and make a difference,” Gates said. “We are proud to partner with FISH. The money can be used to buy food but also helps families pay their power bills or whatever else is needed.

“It’s great knowing our bags of bread and other donations are going to a great cause in helping the community,” he said.

FISH volunteer Susan McLean said clients look forward to the bread they receive from Jersey Mike’s.

“It’s always so fresh,” McLean said.

“Bread is always in short supply, and the fresh bread from Jersey Mike helps to increase our supply for families,” Coen said.

Gig Harbor Marketing Director Karen Scott and members of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce also attended the ceremony.

“This a prime example of companies partnering with local nonprofit organizations to benefit the community,” Chamber President Warren Zimmerman said.

“Whether it is donating money, bread, catering boxes or certificates for people, we are glad to be able to share financially and raise awareness for those in need,” Gates added. “Jersey Mike’s is glad to give back to Gig Harbor.
