Jersey Mike’s Subs Raises Funds For Cancer For College At Grand Opening

Jersey Mike’s Subs opened its first store in San Marcos.  Jersey Mike’s owner Steven Leonard knows the importance of community relations and celebrated his new ties with the area during his grand opening on August 25, 2010.

To commemorate the event, the new restaurant, located at 595 Grand Avenue, in the Creekside Marketplace hosted a 5-day fundraiser from Wed., August 25 through Sun., August 29, with proceeds supporting Cancer for College.  Anyone who had a fundraising coupon received a free regular size sub with a minimum $1 donation.  Coupons were distributed throughout the community.

“One of the best qualities about Jersey Mike’s is its commitment to giving back to the community. Craig Pollard, who has battled cancer most of his life, created Cancer for College in 1993.  I heard about his charity from my wife and thought it was a great cause.  Personally, I have experienced and appreciate the importance of a charity like this because I had a family member who had Hodgkin’s disease as a teenager.  To be able to give the college dream to a cancer survivor is an incredible feeling,” said Leonard.

The mission of Cancer for College is to give hope and inspiration to cancer survivors and amputees by presenting college scholarships.  The charity has provided over $750,000 in scholarships.  Celebrity Will Farrell, a friend of Pollard’s, vigorously participates in events to support Cancer for College.

Reaching out to the community is a key component of Jersey Mike’s mission.  All franchise owners find ways to support their neighbors and employees are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents as well.  “When you are an active contributor in the community it shows,” said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO.  “Steve Leonard is committed to helping the San Marcos community.  We congratulate him on his new store.”

Leonard has been co-Area Director for Jersey Mike’s since 2009 and this will be the fifth store opened in the greater San Diego area during that time. “I was initially attracted to Jersey Mike’s because of the brand perception.  The customer service and quality of the food is outstanding,” said Leonard, whose favorite Jersey Mike’s Sub is the #9 Club Supreme served Mike’s Way.  “San Marcos is a great community; we are located right by two colleges and high schools. I am eager to bring the number one sub sandwich concept to San Marcos.”

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday –Sunday. You can contact this store directly at (760) 471-2211.
