Jersey Mike’s Raises $50k For Boys & Girls Clubs

June 17, 2009 • Manasquan, NJ

Members from Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), such as this group from the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Greenville (SC), visited local Jersey Mike's Subs to hear stories of entrepreneurism, see how the business is run and try their hand at making authentic subs. This was part of Jersey Mike's national fundraising initiative which raised $50,000 in the first quarter of 2009 for the organization. For the first time, the company rallied its entire national network of franchise owners to action to support a singular cause. "We are huge proponents of mentoring, which is why we are so inspired by the work of Boys & Girls Clubs," said Jersey Mike's founder Peter Cancro. He started the sub business when he was only 17 and credits an important mentor – his football coach - for believing in him and supporting his dreams.

Jersey Mike's Subs, known for its commitment to the communities it serves, raised $50,000 in the first quarter of 2009 for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). For the first time, the company rallied its entire national network of franchise owners to action to support a singular cause. Tens of thousands of coupons were distributed in markets throughout the country entitling recipients to a free regular sub upon presentation of the coupon and $1 donation to the charity.

"We are very aware that some of our greatest charitable organizations are becoming even more essential in these tough economic times," said Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of Jersey Mike's. "We want to thank all of our customers and franchisees who participated in the fundraiser. These contributions offer kids the chance to believe in, and achieve, their dreams and that will make a huge difference in our world."

In addition to the coupon fundraiser for BGCA, Jersey Mike's store owners in many cities invited members from local Boys & Girls Clubs in to hear their stories of entrepreneurism, see how the business is run and try their hand at making an authentic sub made "Mike's Way" (the company's popular way to top a sub with onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a signature blend of olive oil, red wine vinegar and spices).

"Many thanks to Peter Cancro and Jersey Mike's - this support enables us to continue to fulfill our promise of helping young people reach their full potential," said Cyndi Court, executive vice president, BGCA. "We also appreciate the time the Jersey Mike's store owners spent with our members. It is a learning experience the children will never forget."
