The Man Behind the Tradition

We’re only as good as the sandwich that comes across the counter and the smiling face that prepares and serves it.
Peter Cancro, CEO of Jersey Mike's Franchise Systems

These are the words of Peter Cancro, the man behind the tradition known as Jersey Mike’s. His experience in the submarine sandwich business is difficult to match – he’s been working in the business since he was fourteen. Four years later, at the age of 17, he decided to bypass a potential football career at college to buy the business. Prior to his eighteenth birthday, before state law would even permit him to use a slicing machine, Peter Cancro owned the original Jersey Mike’s. Realizing what a great opportunity Jersey Mike’s was for him, he decided to share his experience and knowledge with other entrepreneurs by franchising Jersey Mike’s.

“One of the best things about being an entrepreneur and owning a Jersey Mike’s is that it provides a great opportunity to support the community you work in,” says Peter Cancro.

He has always been a strong supporter of the community. In fact, community involvement is another tradition at Jersey Mike’s. Being a perceptive businessman, Peter recognized that becoming involved in the community solved a major problem faced by fast food restaurants: their image as cold, impersonal outsiders.

That’s why all Jersey Mike’s owners are encouraged to become involved in the community they operate in. Not only is it good business, but it is also personally rewarding.
